Tottenham finally found a way to win at Stamford Bridge again, beating Chelsea 2-0 on Saturday to claim a rare league victory at the home of their London rivals.
Spurs had won only once in their previous 36 league visits to Chelsea, with that success coming in April 2018 when Mauricio Pochettino’s side defeated Antonio Conte’s team 3-1.
Their latest triumph ended another long wait and gave them consecutive league victories.
The visitors secured the points through a late own goal from Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders and a second strike by Mathys Tel, punishing the hosts during a decisive spell in the closing stages.
For much of the match, Chelsea threatened to frustrate Tottenham’s attempt to improve that record.
Antonin Kinsky made important saves from Cole Palmer, Jordan Henderson and Pedro Neto as the hosts looked to break the deadlock.
But the match changed in the 77th minute. Penders came to deal with a corner and punched the ball into his own net while under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, handing Tottenham the lead.
Chelsea’s position worsened when Palmer was sent off three minutes later after receiving a second yellow card. His dismissal left the hosts with ten men and gave Spurs a numerical advantage for the final stages.
Tel made certain of the result in the 87th minute.
The French forward carried the ball forward from around halfway and finished with a low shot from distance, capping a decisive individual effort.
The victory also gives Tottenham renewed momentum after a difficult start to their league campaign.
They had recorded their first Premier League win on Monday with a 3-1 home victory over Coventry City before following it up at Stamford Bridge.
Those consecutive results lifted Spurs to 12th place, offering a boost after their early struggles.
