Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has sent shockwaves of excitement across the country after revealing a grand government plan to host English Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal in Nairobi.
Speaking on Sunday, November 8, 2026, the Cabinet Secretary announced that President William Ruto is orchestrating a historic deal to fly the two iconic football clubs to Kenya for an exhibition match in July 2027.
"Next year, in July, the President will bring Manchester United and Arsenal to Nairobi to play a match," Murkomen declared.
The highly anticipated match is expected to serve as the crown jewel of events at the newly built, 60,000-seater Raila Odinga International Stadium. The ultra-modern arena is slated to officially open its doors in January 2027 with a clash between FC Bayern Munich and AFC Ajax, making the EPL face-off a massive follow-up for local fans.
This ambitious initiative follows President Ruto’s earlier engagement at the 2026 G7 Summit, where he formally invited Arsenal to visit Kenya after being amazed by the massive street celebrations by local fans when the Gunners clinched the EPL title.
However, the timing of the announcement has raised sharp questions and exposed a major chronological confusion among analytical football fans. The CS stated that the fixture would take place in July 2027 "shortly before the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)".
In reality, CAF has officially confirmed that AFCON 2027 will run from June 19 to July 17, 2027. This means the tournament will already be underway or concluding by the time the European clubs arrive for their traditional late-July summer pre-season tours.
Rather than a pre-AFCON preparation match, sports analysts suggest the blockbuster friendly will likely serve as a grand post-AFCON celebratory showcase to cap off Kenya's summer of football.
