Chelsea suffered their first home Premier League defeat of the season after Tottenham claimed a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
The Defeat leaves Xabi Alonso with fresh problems ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool.
The Blues had hoped to take advantage of their home fixture to move level on points with third-placed Brighton.
Instead, they finished the London derby with ten players after Cole Palmer was sent off and goalkeeper Mike Penders committed a costly error.
Chelsea had opportunities to take control before the visitors scored. Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky denied Palmer, Jordan Henderson and Pedro Neto as the hosts searched for an opening goal.
Penders, making his first league start following Emi Martinez’s fractured jaw against Everton, also produced important saves earlier in the contest.
However, his evening took a difficult turn in the 77th minute when he punched a Tottenham corner into his own net under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke.
Chelsea’s response was further undermined when Palmer received a second yellow card three minutes later.
The England international had been booked earlier following a challenge on Mateus Fernandes before a late tackle on Conor Gallagher resulted in his dismissal.
Tottenham took advantage of their numerical superiority, with Mathys Tel settling the contest in the 87th minute.
The forward drove towards goal from around halfway before beating Penders with a low strike from distance.
Chelsea also had to contend with the absence of injured striker Joao Pedro.
Morgan Rogers struggled in the false nine role, while teenage winger Geovany Quenda found it difficult to make an impact on his first league start since joining from Sporting in a £40 million summer move.
The defeat ends Chelsea’s unbeaten home league run and leaves Alonso needing to address both their attacking limitations and their response to setbacks.
Palmer’s suspension adds another complication, with the midfielder set to miss the Carabao Cup last-16 tie against Liverpool at Anfield.
