Manchester United finally have a win to celebrate. Now Michael Carrick needs to turn that into league points, as his side host Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon in what could be his final game before a review of his position during the international break.
Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Roma was remarkable and totally out of keeping with their season overall. United trailed 2-0 inside 17 minutes and looked a beaten side at half-time, but Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty at the second attempt after the break, and Matheus Cunha scored twice late on, including the winner with five minutes left. It ended a nine-game winless run.
“When you watch the [Roma] game back, in the first half it wasn’t so bad,” said Carrick. “There were moments in there that we left ourselves short really.
“They’re the moments we have got to clean up on. Little moments here and there that have changed games for us, which is football, something we have to manage – the first half against Chelsea was very good.
“I think we are showing signs of improvement in that respect. We have got to take that moving forward.
“Nothing is done yet. Nothing is achieved yet. It is one moment in time that we need to use to move forward. We need more of it, for sure.”
The Premier League remains the bigger problem. United are 17th, with only one league win from their first nine games, and they lost 2-0 at Chelsea last weekend.
Villa arrive at Old Trafford in a less positive mood after a 3-0 defeat at Barcelona on Tuesday. Before that, they drew 1-1 with Fulham, two results that took some of the shine off their win over Manchester City.
Unai Emery will still be confident. His side have been excellent in Europe, have one of the most organised structures in the league, and Nicolas Jackson has been in good form up front.
United won the corresponding fixture last season 3-1 in March.

United have a long injury list. Carlos Baleba is out after picking up a hamstring injury against Roma, and Benjamin Šeško (shin), Manuel Ugarte (knee) and Luke Shaw are all unavailable. Shaw is not expected back until after the international break.
Lisandro Martínez is suspended after his red card at Chelsea. Marcus Rashford (hip) and Patrick Dorgu (hamstring) are both doubts as they work their way back to fitness.
Villa are still without former United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Amadou Onana and Matteo Ruggeri. Ian Maatsen is expected to continue at left-back.

Yes, United did superbly well to come back against Roma in midweek but you can’t ignore their league form which is dreadful. Emery will have Villa supremely organised and we fancy the visitors to leave Old Trafford with all three points.
