Otley fall short in five-try defeat against Sheffield Tigers

Otley made a bright start, with Chris Jackson catching the kick-off and charging forward as his team-mates advanced towards the Sheffield line.

They reached within five metres but knocked on in the tackle.

A penalty gave the hosts another opportunity in the 22, and they quickly moved the ball across the pitch, allowing Jackson to cross for his first try of the season.

Freddie Spensley added the conversion.

Otley soon came under pressure after conceding a penalty, with Sheffield kicking into the clubhouse corner.

The hosts recovered possession but were forced to defend again after another penalty.

Tigers appeared to have crossed the line, only to be held up.

A kicking exchange resulted in a Sheffield 50:22.

On 10 minutes, the visitors took the resulting line-out quickly, before the lines had formed, and Dom Santamaria crossed to reduce the deficit.

Sheffield continued to pin Otley back before Alfie Hewitt gathered a grubber kick in the clubhouse corner and put the ball into touch.

The subsequent maul was illegally stopped short of the line, but the visitors moved the ball across the pitch, allowing Luca Orchard to score in the corner.

Otley responded by pushing Sheffield back into their own half, with Hewitt's run and kick taking play into the 22.

From a line-out 15 metres out, the pack drove forward and, after being stopped once, Corey McCormack powered over.

Spensley converted to restore the hosts' lead.

However, that advantage lasted just five minutes.

James Broadley's kick from inside his own 22 curved into Otley's territory, where Tom O'Brien quickly gathered and threw the ball back into play.

Broadley crossed under the posts, with O'Brien adding the extras.

Sheffield continued to apply pressure, forcing Otley into desperate defending following a line-out in the hosts' 22.

A penalty followed, and Tigers opted for a scrum.

As it moved around, Silas Talbot picked up the ball and went left to score, with O'Brien's conversion making it 24-14 at half-time to the visitors.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half were evenly contested, with much of the action taking place between the two 22s.

After defending Sheffield's only attack into their 22, Otley worked their way into the visitors' territory following a penalty kicked into the scoreboard corner.

They initially lost the line-out but regained possession when Hewitt collected an attempted clearance.

He then grounded the ball over the line to score, with Spensley converting.

The hosts continued to push for an equaliser, with their pack knocking on centimetres from the line.

They earned another penalty just outside the 22 and came close to scoring before conceding a scrum.

Otley were pushed back into their own half and caught offside, allowing Sheffield to attack again.

O'Brien's grubber kick from just outside the 22 was collected by Louis Townsend, who grounded the ball with two minutes remaining.

Despite trailing by 10 points, Otley refused to give up.

Caleb Kudjoe came close to reaching the Sheffield line before winning a penalty.

Scott Irvine opted for a tap-and-go, and the hosts made four further attempts to force their way over but were eventually held up, leaving them empty-handed.
