Stubborn Russell Martin wouldn't take my advice - it cost him Rangers job and will do the same at Leicester

The 40-year-old is in charge at the King Power Stadium but it has been far from plain sailing

Former Rangers manager Russell Martin

Ex England boss Sam Allardyce insists he wouldn’t have wasted his time giving Russell Martin advice at Rangers because he’s too stubborn to listen - and reckons that attitude will also cost him his job at Leicester City.

Martin had a catastrophic spell in charge at Ibrox which saw him bulleted after just 17 games and one Scottish Premiership victory but has found a way back into management at the Foxes.

The 2016 Premier League champions have had a spectacular fall from grace but Martin has struggled even in England’s third tier with the Foxes, leading to many fans calling for him to be sacked again.

And Allardyce, a veteran boss in the English Premier League, told Boyle Sports and Footy Accumulators’ podcast No Tippy tappy Football, that he wouldn’t give any advice to ex-Rangers boss Martin in his current stint at Leicester City, because he wouldn’t listen to what he has to say.

He said: “I wouldn’t give any advice to Russell Martin at Leicester, because I know he wouldn’t take it. It cost him his job at Southampton, it cost him his job at Rangers, and it’s going to cost him at job at Leicester.

“His beliefs are far away and beyond the capabilities of the players he’s using. The players probably don’t like it either.

“When he went into the Premier League with Southampton, there was no adjustment to trying to get results, based on the purity of his beliefs in football.

“You live and die by your beliefs – Martin shouldn’t listen to me just because I say something, but when you keep losing your job because of your style of play, then what do you do? You need to stay in the game.

“You look at what Daniel Farke did at Leeds after coming back to the Premier League – they started to go direct through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and it saved his job! They’ve moved on, and nobody’s complaining about where Leeds are in the table now.”
