When England manager Thomas Tuchel announced his squad for the upcoming international break against Croatia and Spain, it didn't include Chelsea star Cole Palmer, with the 24-year-old being left out for the seventh time in nine camps Tuchel has been in charge of.
Three Lions medics checked Palmer’s fitness with Chelsea after he withdrew from the last England camp due to injury. But regardless of Palmer's clean bill of health and his good form, it still wasn't enough for Tuchel to call him up, saying he's "missed too many chances."
The number 10 position, which Palmer usually occupies, is one of England's most stacked positions, with Fulham's Josh King and Borussia Dortmund's Jobe Bellingham both getting their first senior international call-ups.
The October international break appears to have been the final straw for Tuchel when it came to the former Manchester City man. With the depth and talent now available to the German, Palmer could face an uphill battle to earn his place back in the England squad, despite the manager insisting that his omission is "nothing personal."
"We trust the team who was with us and had such an excellent camp [last time]. If you're in camp, if you're good and the team is flying, you have every right to stay with us. You contributed in the right manner, in an excellent way."
"We have enough number 10s, and we stick to the guys who were in the previous camp because we were happy with the two and a half weeks we had together."
No one can deny that Palmer is one of the most talented in the squad, and if he can regain the type of form he managed to reach when he first joined Chelsea, consistently and injury free, then it would almost seem impossible for Tuchel to keep overlooking him.
Although currently it doesn't look likely that Palmer will be selected for any England squads in the near future, there could be some hope for him, with Ben White seemingly back in the England mix, when only four years ago he had seemingly refused to be picked by Gareth Southgate.
This happened during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after the Arsenal defender had gotten into a row with assistant manager Steve Holland, but made his return to the England setup under Tuchel this year, making his first appearance against Uruguay.
Palmer isn't the only player to feel like they're being frozen out by Tuchel, with Phil Foden and Kobbie Mainoo both not being selected for this upcoming camp, and admittedly, both haven't been at their best in the past 18 months. Tuchel seems to be selecting those who play consistently whilst putting in good performances, such as Jobe Bellingham and Josh King.
