Wolverhampton Wanderers have yet to reach the heights many expected after their relegation from the Premier League last season, as pressure is mounting on head coach Cesar Peixoto.
Wolves, after 11 league games, sit in 7th in the Championship table, as whilst the Old Gold could have undergone a much worse start to life back in the second tier, it could be going a lot better.
Many had expected them to be fighting in and amongst the automatic promotion places for the majority of the campaign, and though they aren't far away, there are clear warning signs around the Black Country outfit right now.
With 18 points from 11 games, Wolves are sandwiched between Stoke City and Southampton in the table as things stand, though had the Saints not suffered a point deduction at the beginning of the campaign, they'd only be just above Queens Park Rangers.
After falling to a shock home defeat at the hands of Bolton Wanderers, Wolves battled from 1-0 down to claim a 2-1 win at Burnley the following game, but would concede a late equaliser at home to Portsmouth on Tuesday, as things appear to be not quite right at Molineux right now.
Peixoto's tempers boiled over in a flashpoint with Pompey boss John Mousinho following their home draw, with the Portuguese head coach appearing to be feeling a bit of pressure already.
Having only ever played and managed in his native Portugal prior to joining Wolves, Peixoto guided Gil Vicente to a 6th-placed finish in the Liga Portugal last season, and was promptly awarded the top job at Molineux. However, it came in controversial circumstances.
Peixoto replaced Rob Edwards at the helm, with the Welshman having been poached from Middlesbrough in November 2025; it was largely expected that the former defender would remain in charge of Wolves despite relegation.
According to Pete O'Rourke, Edwards only found out about rumours of his dismissal via social media from a family member, which was then confirmed to him in a phone call with the club's higher-ups.
Indeed, this would have come as a major shock to the 43-year-old, who surely will have been keeping an eye on how his former club have been getting on since his departure.
With Peixoto facing increased pressure at Wolves, Edwards must be laughing at his current situation.
Whilst the Portuguese head coach is not expected to be dismissed anytime soon, there is a clear fragility in his squad that he must fix sooner rather than later; otherwise, Wolves will drift from the Championship play-off places, and he will lose his job.
Certainly, Edwards' pleasure will not be coming from a vindictive place towards Peixoto, but more so from the manner in which he was sacked, and he will surely believe he would be doing a better job than his successor right now.
The Welshman appears to be on a hiatus from management right now as he awaits his next opportunity, which almost definitely won't be Wolves, with his relationship with the club now in tatters.
What did you make of Rob Edwards' dismissal? Was sacking him and replacing him with Peixoto the right call? Share your thoughts below!
Wolves, at the moment, remain in automatic promotion contention. However, results and performances under Peixoto, as of late, haven't been totally convincing, and an improvement in this area sooner rather than later is a necessity if he wants to keep his job.
Time will tell whether dismissing Edwards for the Portuguese boss was the correct decision, though regardless of the outcome, Edwards will likely always feel aggrieved by his dismissal and the manner in which it occurred.
