Jodie Burrage has revealed that she has received death threats on social media after playing her first match on the WTA Tour after 16 months away.

The British tennis player, who is number 474 in the rankings, was defeated in the first round in Chennai by India's Vaishnavi Adkar 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

What a welcome back to the tour! Now I remember why I left. When are you going to do something about it?

After the defeat, Jodie Burrage (27 years old) shared on her Instagram "stories" the attacks she suffered on social media and reported them to the WTA.

"What a welcome back to the tour! Now I remember why I left. When are they going to do something about it?", the British tennis player denounced.

Some of the most despicable messages Burrage received were "you are a coward who throws in the towel. Truly, you are a disgrace to this sport. Today you got a beating, and you are precisely the reason why women's sport is a joke", "I hope you go home and kill yourself, because, honestly, it's the best thing you can do. You will never measure up to a man, bitch" or "die and cause riots in the streets".

Katie Boulter was already threatened in 2025: "I hope you get cancer"

Burrage's complaint, Great Britain's No. 15, comes more than a year after another British tennis player, Katie Boulter confessed to having also received death threats through social media.

In 2025 Katie Boulter received messages such as "I hope you get cancer," "we will desecrate your grandmother's grave if she isn't dead by tomorrow," or "go to hell; I've lost the money my mother sent me."
