Leicester City line-ups vs Wigan as Kangasniemi comes in and John Lundstram replacement decided

Russell Martin will have to change his Leicester City XI when they face Wigan Athletic

Russell Martin could make wholesale changes when Leicester City face Wigan Athletic this evening. The Foxes welcome League One's bottom club to the King Power Stadium after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Luton Town over the weekend.

The defeat followed victories over Doncaster Rovers and Bromley, meaning Leicester ended a three-game week having used the same starting line-up throughout. John Lundstram's suspension guarantees at least one change against the Latics, but Martin faces several other selection dilemmas.

It is the first of two games this week, with Stevenage visiting the King Power Stadium at the weekend. Maximum points would round off a successful October for Leicester and move them within touching distance of the play-off places ahead of the Christmas period.

Martin confirmed after the defeat at Kenilworth Road that changes would be made, so our writers have selected the starting line-up they would like to see against Wigan...

I think we'll see at least two changes against Wigan after the way Leicester's defeat at Luton unfolded. I'd change two personnel in the back three, with Luke Thomas moving to left centre-back and Ilari Kangasniemi coming in on the right. Caleb Okoli and Warren O'Hora would drop out, with the latter getting a rest after playing three consecutive full matches.

Wes Burns is the obvious candidate to come in at right wing-back after showing encouraging signs at Kenilworth Road, although he needs to offer more in attack. Will Alves moved over to the left in the second half and is arguably better when he can come in on his right foot.

In midfield, I feel the time has come for Sammy Braybrooke to take on a deeper role. John Lundstram's suspension guarantees at least one change, so I'd start Will Smallbone alongside Braybrooke and unleash an attacking trio of Conor Chaplin, Liam Cullen and Emil Riis.

Against Wigan, City could do with Louis Page's directness in midfield, so I'd be content with him or Braybrooke.

Chaplin hasn't started a league game for City since the MK Dons fixture, but his return from injury could provide an immediate attacking threat behind Riis. I think Cullen should start as a reward for his goal off the bench at Luton, giving City three versatile forwards against the team currently bottom of League One.

It would be foolish of Russell Martin to completely abandon the system that served City so well against Doncaster and Bromley after just one defeat. Instead, the manager should focus on changing personnel rather than the formation.

One of the first ones is the most obvious, with Caleb Okoli dropping out for Ilari Kangasniemi. The Italian has struggled to show that he can be trusted in possession. Had it not been for his error against Luton, City might have come away with a point, at least.

Further forward, Luke Thomas could also make way. The academy graduate has looked more comfortable with less defensive responsibility, while Manchester City loanee Christian McFarlane could come in at wing-back.

Will Smallbone should also be handed his first start, with fellow midfielder John Lundstram suspended. Louis Page struggled at Kenilworth Road but it’s worth sticking with him.

The same goes for Will Alves and Kamari Doyle, who continue to be among City's brightest performers. Emil Riis did not have the best game against Luton, but he is the clearest goal threat for the side so should remain.

He should be joined by Liam Cullen, who has scored in three of his last four away games in League One. The challenge now is to replicate that form on home soil.

Daniel's City XI vs Wigan: McCarthy; Kangasniemi, Souttar, O’Hora; Thomas, Smallbone, Page, Alves; Doyle, Cullen, Riis.
