Rookie wideout could have a breakout opportunity on SNF

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could use a few unexpected contributors to make a difference against the Chicago Bears, and rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst is an intriguing name to watch. With the Bears struggling to consistently prevent explosive passing plays, Sunday night's matchup could give Hurst a chance to showcase the downfield ability that made him an exciting addition to Tampa Bay's offense.

Chicago has been productive defensively in several areas, but it has a noticeable vulnerability in allowing big plays. Through eight games, the Bears have surrendered 23 completions of at least 20 yards on 286 opposing pass plays, an 8% explosive completion rate that ranks 20th in the NFL. They have also allowed 6.01 yards per play, the second-highest in the league. Those numbers should get offensive coordinator Zac Robinson's attention, especially with a receiver like Hurst, who brings an intriguing combination of size and speed. At 6'4, Hurst has the physical profile to create matchup problems downfield. He has recorded 11 receptions for 168 yards and a touchdown this season, averaging 15.3 yards per catch. His longest reception is 40 yards, showing he can stretch the field when given opportunities. The rookie hasn't received a consistent share of the passing game yet, going without a reception in each of the last two games. However, those performances came in games where Tampa Bay attempted just 12 passes against Carolina and three against Atlanta. The younger receivers simply haven't had many opportunities to establish themselves.

With Emeka Egbuka's availability another storyline to monitor, Hurst could benefit from additional opportunities in the passing game. Even if he isn't suddenly asked to become a primary target, Robinson could use his size and speed to attack Chicago's secondary. The Buccaneers also need to give Baker Mayfield opportunities to take calculated shots downfield. Tampa Bay has leaned heavily on its running game recently, but against a Bears defense that has allowed explosive completions, play action and vertical routes could catch Chicago's secondary off guard. Sunday Night Football provides Hurst with a chance to break out.
