Arsenal And Liverpool Eye £30m Japan Keeper: Do Either Need A January Deal?

Goalkeeper transfer news rarely lands when two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs both look settled between the sticks, yet that is where Arsenal and Liverpool stand in November. Arsenal still sit at the very top of the table after winning the title in 2025/26, and Mikel Arteta’s side defend as well as anyone, anchored by the division’s sturdiest centre-back pairing.

Liverpool have taken a different route. Andoni Iraola took charge in June and has introduced a high-intensity, vertical, hyper-pressing style. Results have been strong, with the Reds adjusting well to the new methods, but the approach asks a lot of the defensive line.

Arsenal’s goalkeeping picture is clear. David Raya is the undisputed number one, and Arteta leans on him in build-up, where he acts as an auxiliary playmaker. His ability to claim crosses also supports the control-oriented plan. This summer the club reshaped its cover by signing French goalkeeper Illan Meslier and adding the veteran Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Liverpool look just as covered, with no obvious hole to patch. Alisson Becker remains first choice, and his one-v-one sweeping matters even more behind Iraola’s aggressive high line. The summer brought Giorgi Mamardashvili into the squad, alongside depth options such as Freddie Woodman.

Transfer news on a Premier League rival

CaughtOffside, citing TEAMtalk, reports that Arsenal and Liverpool are among several leading clubs monitoring Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki after his superb start to the season. The 24-year-old Japan international joined from Parma for £30m, yet Villa already expect his eventual sale to beat the £70m goalkeeper record set by Kepa. Liverpool reportedly view him as Alisson’s long-term successor, while Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain admire him.

His profile splits opinion. Suzuki’s long-range distribution is elite, shown by 77% passing accuracy in the Champions League, and he is agile with strong close-range reflexes. He commands his box poorly on deep crosses, though, and long-range shots trouble him.

Should Arsenal or Liverpool sign Suzuki in January?

Neither needs to move. Arsenal should pass: Raya is in his prime, Meslier offers young long-term cover, and Suzuki’s weakness on crosses clashes with Arteta’s demand for complete authority in aerial duels. His passing out from the back suits Arsenal’s courage on the ball, but he looks too erratic against low blocks for a side built on territorial control.

Liverpool hold the stronger case. Iraola favours vertical chaos, and Suzuki’s direct passing launches counter-attacks, which makes him the natural Alisson successor. The risk is a box that already looks exposed in chaotic transitions, and Mamardashvili, among Europe’s best young shot-stoppers, already waits behind Alisson. With Villa certain to demand a record fee and Suzuki still developing quickly in Birmingham, a January deal makes no sense for anyone. Liverpool should be the club to return once Alisson’s decline forces the issue.
