According to a report by Evening Standard on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Chelsea could welcome Pep Chavarria back for their London derby against Tottenham on October 24, while Emi Martinez and Reece James are expected to remain sidelined with injuries.
Martinez is facing several weeks out of action, while James could miss approximately three months following surgery, dealing a blow to head coach Xabi Alonso as Chelsea prepare for a busy run of fixtures.
Martinez suffered a broken jaw during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Everton after colliding with Jarrad Branthwaite. The Argentine goalkeeper was stretchered off the pitch and subsequently underwent surgery, which he confirmed had been successful.
He is expected to return in November, leaving Alonso to rely on his other available goalkeepers until Martinez recovers from the injury.
Meanwhile, Chavarria missed the Everton match after picking up an injury during training on the eve of the game. Alonso confirmed that the club was still assessing the problem and admitted that the full extent of the injury was not yet clear.
The wing-back could return for Saturday's home encounter against Tottenham, although Chelsea will need to evaluate his recovery and fitness before deciding whether he is ready to feature.
James, however, faces a much longer spell on the sidelines after sustaining a knee injury during training. The Chelsea captain had previously struggled with a hamstring problem before undergoing surgery on his latest injury.
The defender is expected to be unavailable for around three months, potentially keeping him out until January. His absence will be a significant setback for Alonso, given his ability to play both at right-back and in midfield.
Chelsea must now assess their available options as they prepare for a demanding period of fixtures. Chavarria's potential return against Tottenham would provide some relief, but Martinez's recovery and James's lengthy absence remain major concerns.
Alonso will hope to manage the club's injury problems effectively while keeping Chelsea competitive as they prepare for the London derby.
