Valentin Barco Names Argentina Teammate He Wants Chelsea To Sign After Transfer Links

Chelsea midfielder Valentín Barco has identified Atlético Madrid defender Cristian Romero as the Argentine international he would most like to see join the Blues, revealing his preferred transfer target during a recent conversation. According to a report by The Athletic on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the 21-year-old named the experienced centre-back when asked which player he would encourage Chelsea’s owners to sign.

Barco made the revelation while speaking with journalist Gastón Edul, who asked him to identify a footballer he would like to welcome to Stamford Bridge. The midfielder gave a brief response, saying “Cuti”, the popular nickname used for Romero.

His answer suggests that Barco would be delighted to share a dressing room with the Atlético defender. Both players represent Argentina internationally, although Romero’s experience and established reputation make him a particularly attractive teammate for the Chelsea midfielder.

Barco has already shared the pitch with several leading figures in the national team, including Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez. Nevertheless, his response indicated that Romero is the player he would particularly welcome at club level.

The 28-year-old defender recently ended his spell in English football after leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Atlético Madrid during the summer transfer window. His departure brought an end to a period in which he established himself as an important figure in Tottenham’s defence.

Romero’s previous encounters with Chelsea were far from successful, however. During his time at Tottenham, he faced the Blues eight times, suffering six defeats while recording one victory and one draw. He also received a red card during one of those meetings, adding to the difficult history between the two London sides.

Despite that record, the Argentine remains highly regarded for his defensive qualities, experience and ability to compete against demanding opposition. His reputation has made him an attractive option for clubs seeking an established centre-back capable of strengthening their back line.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville previously questioned why Chelsea did not make a stronger attempt to secure Romero’s signature during the summer transfer window. His comments reflected the belief that the defender could have been a valuable addition to the Stamford Bridge squad.

Reports from Corriere dello Sport also suggested that Chelsea were among several European clubs monitoring the situation. Inter Milan, Barcelona and Arsenal were reportedly interested before Romero eventually completed his move to Atlético Madrid.

Chelsea ultimately strengthened their defensive department by signing Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal worth approximately £52 million. However, the French defender is currently recovering from a hamstring injury and is expected to remain unavailable for the remainder of 2026.

A potential move for Romero would also have involved complicated negotiations because of the longstanding rivalry between Chelsea and Tottenham. Although relations between the clubs have shown some improvement through previous transfers, Tottenham selling their captain directly to Chelsea would have been particularly sensitive.

For now, Barco’s comments represent an expression of admiration rather than evidence of an active transfer pursuit. There is no confirmation that Chelsea are preparing an offer for Romero, who has only recently joined Atlético Madrid. Nevertheless, the midfielder’s choice has highlighted the defender’s qualities and the respect he commands among his fellow Argentina internationals.
