Hansi Flick Has Major Reason to Beat Atletico Madrid as Barcelona Target Revenge

According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has additional motivation to beat Atletico Madrid when both teams clash on Sunday, November 8, as he aims to extend his side’s advantage in the La Liga title race and settle scores following last season’s knockout disappointments.

Barcelona currently hold a two-point lead over Atletico, meaning a victory would increase the gap to five points. However, a win for Diego Simeone’s team would see them move one point ahead of the Catalan side.

The encounter at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano is important for reasons beyond the league standings. Atletico eliminated Barcelona from both the Copa del Rey and Champions League last season, leaving Flick’s team with an opportunity to respond when the rivals meet again.

Barcelona will draw confidence from their previous league visit to the stadium. In April 2026, they recovered from Giuliano Simeone’s opening goal, with Marcus Rashford equalising before Robert Lewandowski scored a late winner to secure a 2-1 victory. Atletico had also been reduced to ten players after Nicolas Gonzalez was sent off.

However, Barcelona will also be aware of their disappointing cup results against Simeone’s side. Atletico delivered a dominant performance in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final, recording a 4-0 victory. Although Barcelona fought back with a 3-0 win at Camp Nou, Atletico progressed to the final with a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Their Champions League quarter-final meeting brought further disappointment for the Catalans. Barcelona lost the first leg 2-0 at home after Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth scored, following Pau Cubarsi’s dismissal.

Flick’s men responded with a strong performance in Madrid, as Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres scored early to bring the aggregate score level. However, Ademola Lookman restored Atletico’s advantage before the interval.

Barcelona won the return encounter 2-1, but the result was not enough to keep them in the competition, as Atletico advanced with a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Flick will now be hoping his players can secure a positive result on Sunday, giving Barcelona a stronger position in the title race while also gaining some revenge for last season’s defeats.
