Liverpool are reportedly exploring a January loan move for former defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, raising the possibility of a return to Anfield just over a year after his departure.
Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER reported on October 29 that Liverpool had begun sounding out the defender’s representatives and checking supporters’ reactions to a possible return. The initial idea being discussed is reportedly a temporary loan during the January transfer window.
Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool for Real Madrid in 2025, but regular playing time has proved difficult to secure in Spain. FootballTransfers reported on November 1 that he had made three La Liga starts this season and played only 53 minutes for Madrid during the previous month.
Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has also addressed the competition for places at right-back. He explained that using Federico Valverde in the position was a decision made for the team. Mourinho added that he did not expect Alexander-Arnold or Denzel Dumfries to ask to leave, pointing to the demands of a long season as a reason more opportunities should arise.
That makes a possible Liverpool reunion far from straightforward. The English club would need to reach an agreement with Real Madrid, while Alexander-Arnold’s own wishes would be important.
For now, the reported interest is only an early transfer development. No completed deal or agreement has been announced, and the January window will determine whether Liverpool pursue the possibility further.
