Atletico Madrid are considering making Jonathan David’s loan move permanent following the Canadian striker’s impressive start to life in Spain. The club reportedly have the option to sign the 26-year-old for €25 million and are assessing whether to exercise that clause in the coming months.
David joined Atletico from Juventus after finding it difficult to establish himself during his first season in Italian football. Despite arriving in Turin as a free agent from Lille, the forward managed nine goals in 46 appearances for Juventus, a return that fell short of expectations.
His performances have improved since switching to Madrid, where he has quickly made an impact. David has recorded three goals and two assists in five La Liga appearances, giving Atletico encouraging early signs of what he could offer if he remains at the club beyond his loan spell.
However, Atletico have not yet reached a final decision on the striker’s future. Sky Sport Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg reported that the Spanish side are willing to consider activating the €25 million purchase option, with negotiations expected to take place over the coming months.
David is also understood to be comfortable at Atletico and open to staying, a factor that could make discussions easier. His contract with Juventus runs until 2030, meaning the Italian club would need to agree to the terms of any permanent departure once the current arrangement is concluded.
The forward’s recent performances have also strengthened the case for Atletico to retain him. After struggling to deliver consistently in Turin, he appears to have found a more suitable environment in Spain, where he has contributed directly to five goals in his first five league outings.
Data analytics company SciSports has likewise identified Atletico as a promising destination for the Canadian international. Its Career Advice tool awarded the club a Club Fit score of 85, indicating a strong match between David and the Spanish side.
Inter Milan and Roma reportedly received slightly higher scores of 87. However, Juventus could be reluctant to sell the striker to either club because doing so would strengthen direct competitors in Serie A.
Financial considerations could also influence Atletico’s decision. David’s estimated transfer value is €33.3 million, considerably above the €25 million purchase option available to the Madrid club. His valuation previously peaked at €61.8 million during his time at Lille.
Juventus acquired David without paying a transfer fee, so selling him could still generate a financial return despite his underwhelming spell in Italy. Atletico must now determine whether his strong start represents sufficient evidence to commit to a permanent deal.
