Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has identified Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as a strong potential candidate for the Manchester United job, praising the Spaniard's coaching ability, managerial record and influence at his current club.
Carragher believes Emery possesses several qualities that could make him suitable for leading United, particularly the authority he has established at Aston Villa. He compared the manager's position at Villa to the level of control previously enjoyed by legendary Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who exercised considerable influence over the club's football operations during his successful tenure.
“He is a manager I look at when I think about Manchester United,” Carragher said.
The former England international also offered a strong endorsement of Emery's managerial capabilities, describing him as the best coach in the Premier League. His comments reflect the respect Emery has earned through his tactical approach and ability to deliver results across different clubs and competitions.
However, Carragher also questioned whether the Aston Villa manager might eventually seek a new challenge elsewhere in Europe. Despite the progress he has made at Villa, the possibility of competing consistently for the biggest honours could influence his long-term ambitions.
Emery has developed an impressive reputation throughout European football, particularly because of his achievements in the Europa League. His experience at several major clubs and success in continental competitions have established him as one of the more accomplished managers in the game.
Nevertheless, Carragher suggested that Emery's ambition to win the Champions League could become an important consideration when evaluating his future at Aston Villa.
“He wants to win the Champions League. He’s not going to do that at Aston Villa,” Carragher said.
The pundit also highlighted Emery's previous managerial experiences at Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, arguing that a move to Manchester United could offer another opportunity to manage at one of Europe's most prominent clubs.
United's worldwide following, financial strength and history of competing for major trophies could make the position attractive to an ambitious coach. The club's stature offers considerable opportunities, although the pressure to deliver immediate improvements would also be significant.
However, Carragher acknowledged that Emery's potential departure would be difficult for Aston Villa supporters to accept. The Spaniard has become an influential figure at Villa Park, and losing him to a Premier League rival would represent a major development for the club.
His recommendation comes amid increased scrutiny of Manchester United's performances under Michael Carrick. The team's recent difficulties have fuelled discussions about the manager's position and prompted speculation about possible alternatives should the club's leadership decide to make a change.
Emery's name has therefore emerged as part of the broader conversation surrounding United's managerial future. Carragher's comments, however, represent his own assessment of the Spaniard's suitability rather than confirmation of any official approach.
There is no indication in the report that Manchester United have contacted Emery or made a decision to replace Carrick. Emery remains in charge of Aston Villa, and any potential move would depend on the intentions of the manager and the decisions of both clubs.
For now, Carragher's endorsement highlights Emery's standing as a respected Premier League coach, while Manchester United's next steps regarding their managerial situation remain uncertain.
