‘It won’t take a day or a week’ – GFA Communications Director Henry Asante on Black Stars rebuild

Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has urged Ghanaians to remain patient with the Black Stars, insisting that restoring the senior national team to its former glory will require time, commitment and sustained effort.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Asante Twum admitted the Black Stars are going through a difficult period but stressed that the GFA leadership fully understands the magnitude of the challenges confronting the team and is working to reverse the situation.

According to him, supporters should not expect an immediate transformation, as rebuilding a successful national team is a gradual process rather than a quick fix.

“It wouldn’t take a day, wouldn’t take a week; it’ll take a lot more effort and a lot of time to get the team back on track,” he said.

“Where we are at this moment, leadership is aware of the challenges that confront us, and efforts are being made to get the team back on track.”

Asante Twum also acknowledged the criticism directed at the GFA following the team's recent poor performances, noting that success and failure naturally shape public perception in football.

“When you win, you’re hailed, but you don’t expect the people to hail you when the results are poor. That’s what leadership must know and accept,” he added.

The Black Stars have come under intense scrutiny after a disappointing start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, losing 2-0 away to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia.

The back-to-back defeats have left the four-time African champions rooted to the bottom of Group C without a point, significantly increasing the pressure on the Ghana Football Association to find solutions.

In response to the team's struggles, the GFA has appointed an interim technical team led by Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, who will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and former Ghana international Godwin Attram for the upcoming qualifiers against Somalia.

The two matches, scheduled for November, are widely regarded as must-win encounters, with Ghana needing maximum points to revive their qualification hopes and boost their chances of returning to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the previous edition.

As preparations continue, the GFA remains hopeful that the rebuilding process will begin to yield positive results, although Asante Twum has cautioned that lasting success will only come through patience, unity and consistent hard work.
