According to a report by Sky Sports on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has criticised the club for placing too much emphasis on its past achievements, warning that new players could struggle to win trophies at Old Trafford unless significant changes are made.
Fernandes made the comments after United suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The result extended their winless run to seven matches across all competitions under manager Michael Carrick, with the club recording just two victories so far this season.
The Portuguese midfielder believes Manchester United must stop relying on their history and focus on making the right decisions to improve their current situation. He urged everyone at the club to recognise that United are no longer the team they once were.
He said: "Everyone at the club must understand that it’s not the same thing any more. We’re not in the past and we need to look at the future. We need to do things different in the present. I think at this club, we focus too much on looking at what the club was in the past, what the club did in the past, but we are no longer the same. The club needs to understand that, we need to understand that."
Fernandes’ remarks reflect his growing frustration with the situation at Old Trafford as the team continue to struggle for results and fail to deliver the consistency expected of a club of Manchester United’s stature.
The Red Devils have enjoyed considerable success over the years, winning major domestic and European trophies. However, their recent struggles have raised serious questions about the club’s direction and its ability to compete with the strongest teams.
Fernandes also believes the club’s current problems could make it harder to attract players who want to win trophies. He has therefore stressed the need for important changes if United are to return to their former level and give their supporters reasons to celebrate again.
