Manchester United have reportedly begun assessing the possibility of signing Barcelona midfielder Fermín López and Atlético Madrid’s Pablo Barrios as they consider options to strengthen their squad ahead of 2027. The two Spanish internationals are also said to be attracting attention from Chelsea, potentially creating competition between the Premier League rivals if either club decides to pursue a transfer.
According to FootballTransfers on Saturday, October 31, 2026, transfer journalist Matteo Moretto revealed that United had made preliminary enquiries about both players. The club reportedly used a recent Champions League visit to Madrid to collect information about their availability and circumstances.
Speaking on Radio MARCA, Moretto explained that United are examining midfielders with qualities similar to those of Barrios and Fermín because the squad has several areas requiring attention. However, he made clear that the contact was limited to initial enquiries and had not developed into formal negotiations or concrete transfer discussions.
Securing either player would be challenging because both remain important to their respective clubs. Atlético Madrid regard Barrios as a significant member of their team, while Barcelona continue to value Fermín despite repeated reports linking him with Chelsea. Neither Spanish side is expected to welcome an approach without demanding substantial financial compensation.
The estimated prices could also discourage United from making serious moves. Fermín’s reported transfer value stands at approximately €116.5 million, while Barrios is valued at around €57 million. Together, the figures amount to roughly €173.5 million, representing a considerable investment for two midfield additions.
United must also consider other weaknesses within the squad before committing such a large portion of their transfer budget to one department. Although midfield reinforcement is being assessed, the club may have to balance its spending across several positions.
Another factor potentially influencing the recruitment strategy is uncertainty surrounding Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder’s current contract is scheduled to expire at the end of the season, although United possess an option to extend the agreement for another year. His long-term situation has attracted attention following reports of public criticism directed at head coach Michael Carrick.
Those developments have contributed to speculation about Fernandes’ future, although no departure has been confirmed. His contractual position could nevertheless encourage United to examine possible replacements or additional midfield options.
For now, the enquiries concerning Fermín and Barrios appear to be part of an early assessment rather than an indication that either transfer is close. Barcelona and Atlético are expected to resist losing key players, leaving United with difficult negotiations should their interest develop further.
