According to a report by Metro on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has admitted that he was furious with several of his players following their disappointing 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
United suffered a heavy loss against Como, who are making their Champions League debut, leaving Carrick under increased pressure amid the club’s poor start to the season.
The defeat has further exposed United’s inconsistency, with captain Bruno Fernandes also expressing frustration after the match over the club’s tendency to focus too much on past achievements rather than its future.
However, Carrick was unhappy with his players’ performance and stressed that no tactical approach would succeed without sufficient effort and commitment on the pitch.
The United manager explained that his team conceded a goal in the second half because they “half-pressed man-to-man”. He emphasised that hard work and movement were essential to executing any tactical plan, both when moving forward and when tracking back defensively.
Carrick also described the team’s approach as unacceptable, regardless of the result, and said he felt obliged to apologise to the supporters after the disappointing performance.
With United conceding four goals against a side making its first appearance in the competition, Carrick appears to believe that the players must take responsibility for their performance rather than placing the blame solely on the team’s tactics.
The situation has also raised questions about the relationship between the manager and captain, as Fernandes continues to voice concerns about the club’s direction. Their differing views could create further tension at Old Trafford if results do not improve.
Meanwhile, Carrick faces growing pressure to restore confidence within the squad, improve the team’s performances and regain the support of Manchester United fans.
