Osimhen joins Sneijder in rare Galatasaray feat after brace against Fenerbahce

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has reportedly matched a rare Galatasaray scoring achievement previously recorded by former Netherlands international Wesley Sneijder after his two goals inspired the Turkish champions to a 2-1 victory over Fenerbahce in the Istanbul derby.

Osimhen delivered a decisive first-half performance at Rams Park on Monday night, scoring twice to help Galatasaray overcome their fierce rivals and collect all three points in one of Turkish football’s most closely watched fixtures.

The Super Eagles forward opened the scoring after receiving an accurate pass from Barış Yılmaz. He showed his attacking instincts by finishing into the bottom corner, giving Galatasaray an early advantage and putting pressure on the visitors.

The former Napoli striker struck again towards the end of the first half to extend his team’s lead. This time, Osimhen connected with a cross delivered by defender Davinson Sánchez and directed a header into the net, completing his brace before the interval.

Fenerbahce responded after the break and attempted to recover from their two-goal deficit. İrfan Kahveci gave the visitors renewed hope by scoring with an acrobatic scissor kick, reducing the margin and setting up a tense finish to the contest.

Despite the late pressure, Galatasaray managed to protect their advantage until the final whistle. The 2-1 result secured victory in the Istanbul derby and gave the home side the satisfaction of defeating their long-standing rivals.

Beyond the importance of the result, Osimhen’s performance earned him a place in a select piece of Galatasaray history. According to Opta Can, he became only the second player representing the club to score against a Fenerbahce team managed by İsmail Kartal in the Turkish Süper Lig.

Sneijder was the first to achieve the feat, scoring twice against Fenerbahce in October 2014. Osimhen’s brace has now placed him alongside the former Galatasaray midfielder in the record, highlighting the significance of his contribution to the latest derby encounter.

The achievement adds to what has been an impressive campaign for the Nigerian international. His two goals against Fenerbahce took his season tally to nine goals and three assists in nine appearances across all competitions, underlining his importance to Galatasaray’s attacking efforts.

Osimhen’s ability to deliver in a high-pressure fixture also provides encouragement for the club as it pursues its objectives this season. His finishing, movement and aerial threat proved decisive against Fenerbahce, allowing Galatasaray to convert their first-half opportunities into a winning position.

The striker will now aim to maintain his scoring form as the campaign continues. With his goals contributing significantly to the team’s results, Galatasaray will hope he can remain influential in upcoming matches and help sustain their momentum.

For the Super Eagles forward, the derby brace represents both a personal milestone and a valuable contribution to his club. By joining Sneijder in the unusual scoring record, Osimhen has added another notable achievement to his growing list of performances in Turkish football.
