Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly identified France coach Didier Deschamps as his preferred candidate to replace Jose Mourinho if the Portuguese manager fails to improve the team’s performances. The speculation comes amid growing concerns about Madrid’s inconsistent displays and the pressure to meet the expectations associated with one of Europe’s most successful clubs.

According to Madrid Universal on Sunday, October 18, 2026, doubts about Mourinho’s position are beginning to emerge among some senior figures at the Santiago Bernabeu. Journalist Jorge Picon reportedly indicated that members of the club’s executive leadership are becoming increasingly concerned about the direction of the team.

Mourinho arrived with significant backing from the hierarchy and was reportedly given considerable freedom to influence squad recruitment and make key footballing decisions. The club invested in its players to support his efforts to build a competitive side, but the performances and results have allegedly fallen short of expectations.

Real Madrid have struggled to establish consistent form and develop the cohesion expected under Mourinho’s leadership. Their difficulties have reportedly raised concerns that some of the problems experienced during the previous season are continuing, particularly in relation to tactical organisation, playing style and selection decisions. Barcelona’s advantage over their traditional rivals has added to the pressure surrounding Madrid’s campaign.

Certain decisions made by Mourinho have also reportedly attracted criticism behind the scenes. The limited opportunities given to Yan Diomande in the starting lineup and a substitution involving Arda Guler were among the decisions said to have disappointed some members of the club’s leadership.

Despite the reported concerns, Mourinho is believed to retain the support of his players. This suggests that the uncertainty surrounding his position may currently be more pronounced among sections of the boardroom than within the dressing room. However, continued inconsistency could increase scrutiny of his management.

Journalist Sergio Valentin reportedly claimed that Perez has already settled on Deschamps as his preferred alternative if Madrid decide to end Mourinho’s tenure. According to the report, the club president has discussed the possibility with members of his inner circle, although neither a dismissal decision nor contact with Deschamps has been officially confirmed.

Deschamps would bring considerable experience to the role. He guided France to victory at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and subsequently led the national team to the final of the 2022 tournament. His achievements also include winning the World Cup as a player in 1998, placing him among the select group to have lifted the trophy in both playing and managerial capacities.

His experience handling elite footballers and navigating high-pressure competitions could appeal to Madrid if they pursue a change. Nevertheless, replacing Mourinho would be a major decision, given the backing he received upon his appointment and the authority reportedly granted to him.

For now, Deschamps remains a reported option rather than a confirmed successor. Mourinho’s immediate future will depend on whether Madrid’s performances improve and whether the club’s leadership continues to support his project.
