According to a report by Madrid Universal on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Kyle Walker has named Manchester United and Manchester City as possible destinations for Trent Alexander-Arnold if the Real Madrid defender decides to leave the Spanish club.
The former Manchester City defender has also expressed doubts about whether the England international could return to Liverpool following his departure from Anfield.
Real Madrid recorded an impressive 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday. However, Alexander-Arnold continues to struggle for regular playing time under manager Jose Mourinho.
The 28-year-old joined Los Blancos from Liverpool in 2025, but his situation has become increasingly challenging as Mourinho favours other options at right-back, including Federico Valverde and Denzel Dumfries.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Walker discussed the possibility of Alexander-Arnold returning to English football.
“Can he go back to Liverpool with the way that he left? I’m not too sure,” Walker said.
He went on to identify Manchester United and Manchester City as potential destinations if the defender eventually decides to leave Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold has made seven appearances this season, including four starts, but has managed just 345 minutes on the pitch. He currently appears to be Mourinho’s third-choice option at right-back.
His limited role was evident in the match against Barcelona, where Valverde started before Dumfries replaced him in the second half.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his position, Alexander-Arnold reportedly has no plans to leave Madrid in January. The Englishman remains determined to convince Mourinho that he deserves more opportunities in the team.
His exceptional passing range and creativity could offer Madrid an additional attacking threat, particularly against opponents who adopt a deep defensive approach.
However, Mourinho places a strong emphasis on defensive reliability and tactical balance. Valverde’s energy and Dumfries’ physical presence currently appear to fit the manager’s approach better than Alexander-Arnold’s defensive profile.
Madrid must now decide whether to provide the defender with more playing time or consider a possible transfer. Although selling him could generate a reasonable fee, allowing him to leave after just 18 months might be considered premature.
Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to be satisfied with an extended spell on the sidelines, leaving his long-term future at the Santiago Bernabeu uncertain.
