José Mourinho has admitted that it is difficult for him to see players becoming frustrated by a lack of playing time, but he does not believe Trent Alexander-Arnold or Denzel Dumfries will request transfers away from Real Madrid during the January window.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the manager acknowledged the challenges faced by both defenders as they compete for opportunities in the team. Alexander-Arnold, in particular, has struggled to establish himself since joining Madrid, starting only three La Liga matches this season and receiving just 53 minutes of action over the past month.
His limited involvement has fuelled speculation about a possible return to English football. Arsenal, Chelsea and former club Liverpool have reportedly been mentioned as potential destinations for the 28-year-old, although there is no indication that he is actively seeking an exit.
Mourinho explained that he understands how disappointing limited opportunities can be for professional footballers. However, he maintained that decisions about team selection must sometimes take priority over individual expectations. He also recognised the situation involving Dumfries, who is competing with Alexander-Arnold while Federico Valverde has been used in the right-back position.
“I don’t like making players feel bad. I want them to feel good,” Mourinho said. “But sometimes there are things more important than those feelings. At this moment, I decided to change the midfield and use Fede Valverde there.”
The manager added that the demands of a lengthy campaign would eventually create opportunities for players who are currently struggling for regular minutes. He pointed to a crowded fixture schedule, fatigue, suspensions and injuries as factors that could influence selection as the season progresses.
Despite acknowledging the emotional impact of being left out, Mourinho said he did not anticipate either Alexander-Arnold or Dumfries asking to leave when the transfer window reopens.
Alexander-Arnold moved to the Spanish capital in 2025 after his contract with Liverpool expired. Although he featured in 21 league matches during his first season, he has not managed to establish himself as a regular starter. Reports have also suggested that Liverpool could explore a loan arrangement, but the defender is understood to be concentrating on earning his place, while Real Madrid are not actively seeking to sell him.
Madrid's recent results could further complicate the situation. Having won 11 of their last 13 matches, the club may have little immediate reason to make major adjustments to its current approach. Consequently, Alexander-Arnold could need to remain patient and take advantage of future opportunities to convince Mourinho that he deserves a more prominent role.
