Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has named Unai Emery and Eddie Howe as the two managers Manchester United should consider if they decide to part ways with Michael Carrick, according to a report by Metro on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Carrick’s position has come under increasing scrutiny following United’s disappointing 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The result extended the club’s winless run across all competitions to nine matches, further increasing uncertainty about the manager’s future.
Chelsea took control shortly after the interval when Morgan Rogers scored the opening goal. United’s situation deteriorated further after Lisandro Martinez was dismissed for a second bookable offence, with Cole Palmer subsequently converting the resulting penalty to complete the victory for Xabi Alonso’s side.
The defeat left Manchester United in 17th position in the Premier League after nine matches. They remained outside the relegation places only because of a superior goal difference, highlighting the seriousness of their difficult start to the campaign.
Although Carrick had reportedly been given time to improve the team’s performances, the lack of positive results has continued to fuel speculation about a possible managerial change. Redknapp addressed the situation during an appearance on Sky Sports, where he identified Emery and Howe as the leading candidates United should examine if they decide to appoint a new manager.
“There are only, I think, two runners,” he said, while acknowledging that Carrick remained in charge and that discussions about replacing him should be treated carefully.
Redknapp added that another managerial change could become unavoidable if the team's performances failed to improve. He then identified Emery and Howe as the two realistic possibilities he would consider for the position.
The former midfielder expressed particular confidence in Emery, pointing to the Spaniard’s experience and achievements with Aston Villa. He believes the Villa manager possesses the tactical knowledge and managerial ability required to handle the demands associated with leading Manchester United.
However, Redknapp also raised doubts about whether Emery would be prepared to leave Villa Park. The Spaniard has established considerable influence over Villa’s footballing operations, making a potential departure a complicated prospect.
Germany national team manager Julian Nagelsmann was also mentioned as another possible name, although Redknapp appeared more convinced by Emery’s suitability for the Old Trafford position.
“With his abilities, he would probably be the only one that I would trust to be able to do it,” Redknapp said.
He further argued that United’s problems extend beyond the appointment of a manager and assistant coach. In his view, substantial changes would be required behind the scenes, meaning whoever takes charge would face challenges involving the club’s wider footballing structure.
Manchester United must now concentrate on improving their results, with their forthcoming fixtures offering Carrick an opportunity to restore confidence and reduce the pressure surrounding his position. Whether that happens will be important in determining the direction of the club’s managerial plans.
