Chelsea Now Want to Sign a Player Emi Martinez Believes Can Replace Lionel Messi

According to a report by Football London on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Argentine attacking midfielder Nico Paz, who has been tipped by goalkeeper Emi Martinez as a potential successor to Lionel Messi as Argentina’s next number 10 following the legendary forward’s international retirement.

Messi’s departure from international football has left Argentina supporters wondering who could eventually fill the void left by their iconic captain and record-breaking attacking star.

Paz recently featured in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Benin, scoring a goal and providing two assists for Messi, while the Como midfielder also found the net during the international encounter.

The 6ft 1in youngster has attracted attention with his impressive performances in Italy, showcasing his technical ability, creativity and goalscoring instincts despite having a different physical profile from Messi.

His growing reputation received another boost on Wednesday after he scored twice in Como’s emphatic 4-1 Champions League victory over Manchester United, further increasing interest from several European clubs, including Chelsea.

Reports suggest Chelsea have sent scouts to monitor the Argentine midfielder, while the club’s ownership is reportedly prepared to consider a significant transfer fee to secure his services.

Martinez has also publicly expressed his confidence in Paz’s potential. After the midfielder shared an Instagram post following Argentina’s 4-0 victory over Bolivia, the Chelsea goalkeeper responded with a question: “New Number 10?”

The comment suggested that Martinez believes Paz could eventually inherit Argentina’s famous number 10 shirt. However, the youngster has previously admitted that he is unsure whether he can replace Messi in that role.

Chelsea’s interest in Paz is not entirely new, as the club have reportedly considered signing the former Real Madrid prospect in the past. However, securing his signature could prove difficult because of competition from other European sides.

Real Madrid reportedly have a buyback clause worth £70 million, which could allow the Spanish giants to bring Paz back to the Santiago Bernabeu if they decide to pursue a move.

Since joining Como from Real Madrid, Paz has developed into one of European football’s most promising young attacking midfielders, delivering impressive performances under manager Cesc Fabregas.

Across 85 appearances in all competitions over two seasons, the midfielder has contributed to 45 goals, underlining his growing influence and consistency since leaving the Spanish capital.

This season, Paz has registered four goals and five assists in 10 appearances, including his impressive display against Manchester United. At international level, he has also scored four goals in 14 appearances for Argentina.

Chelsea are expected to continue monitoring the youngster as they assess potential transfer opportunities. His creativity, goalscoring ability and growing international reputation could make him an important target for the Stamford Bridge club in their efforts to strengthen their attacking options.
