Gambia TDS Coach Michael Spencer Reflects on Scorpion Boys’ U-15 World Cup & Festival Experience

Reflecting on our journey at the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, I am filled with immense pride—not just for the results on the pitch, but for the profound personal and collective transformation of our players.

Taking a group of 15-year-olds onto the global stage is a massive undertaking. Over the course of 10 intense, high-stakes games against world-class opposition, these young player’s didn’t just play football; they grew up.

Here are the biggest takeaways from the players’ journey: Sticking to our principles: Before we left, we began instilling a core set of tactical and behavioral principles. Under tournament pressure, it is incredibly easy for young players to panic and abandon the plan. Instead, through every triumph and setback, the boys showed immense maturity by sticking to our philosophy, trusting the system, and playing with identity.

The reality of international standards: Playing 10 games at this level taught our players exactly what it takes to compete globally. They learned that at the world level, small details dictate big outcomes. Facing different football cultures forced them to think faster, move smarter, and adapt to styles they had never encountered before.

Conquering the mental game: For many of these boys, representing The Gambia on a global stage comes with heavy expectations. Navigating the physical fatigue of a 10-match tournament alongside the emotional highs and lows was their steepest learning curve. They learned how to block out the noise, lean on each other, and stay mentally locked in from the first whistle to the last.

As we head back to The Gambia, we bring home invaluable experience that will shape these players for years to come. We return with a deep sense of confidence, knowing we have the quality to mix it with the very best in the world.

At the same time, we leave Baku with a healthy dose of humility. The boys now know firsthand that there is another level to this game, and we must work twice as hard to reach it and stay there.

This tournament was a masterclass in player development. The technical skills, tactical understanding, and psychological resilience these boys developed over those 10 games have laid a massive foundation for their future careers.
