According to a report by Madrid Universal on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, former Real Madrid midfielder Alvaro Benito has explained what Vinicius Junior must improve to fit into Jose Mourinho's tactical system, insisting that the Brazilian forward needs to take greater responsibility defensively.
Vinicius is expected to return to the Real Madrid squad after serving a domestic suspension. However, his absence has coincided with an improvement in the team's performances, with Mourinho's side winning consecutive matches without the Brazilian international.
The recent results have suggested that the Portuguese manager is gradually building a more organised and disciplined team, with every player expected to contribute to the collective effort.
The situation has also increased competition for attacking positions, particularly with young forward Yan Diomande strengthening his position through impressive performances.
Speaking on El Larguero, Benito acknowledged that Real Madrid now look more organised as a collective unit than they did earlier in the campaign.
"We've found our way now, and we'll see what happens when Vinicius returns," the former midfielder said.
He also praised Bernardo Silva for the qualities he has introduced into Madrid's midfield, particularly his ability to retain possession, escape pressure and create space.
"I think Bernardo Silva brings something the other central midfielders lacked when they were playing, which is that moment of pause, the ability to turn, feint and escape pressure," Benito explained.
However, he believes the biggest improvement has been the team's collective commitment under Mourinho.
Benito argued that Real Madrid's combination of quick attacking transitions, aggressive pressing and compact positioning could make them difficult opponents.
Nevertheless, he believes Vinicius must adapt to those tactical demands if he wants to remain a regular starter.
"The simple thing would be for Vinicius to get on board," he said.
He further criticised the Brazilian's defensive contribution, claiming that his performances without possession remain a concern.
"What's the problem with Vinicius That in defence, he shirks his responsibilities for most of the match," Benito added.
The former midfielder insisted that attacking quality alone should not guarantee a starting position, particularly under a manager who demands discipline from every member of his squad.
With Diomande also competing for opportunities, Benito believes Mourinho should select players based on their overall contributions.
"There are matches for everyone, competition on equal terms," he said.
He concluded that players must fulfil their defensive responsibilities before being judged on their attacking performances and ability to make a difference.
Vinicius' return will therefore present Mourinho with an important selection decision as Real Madrid attempt to maintain their recent improvement.
