Man Utd Boardroom Tensions Rise As Executives Clash Over Carrick’s Successor

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly experiencing growing tensions among senior executives over who should replace under-pressure manager Michael Carrick if the club decides to end his tenure.

Director of football Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell are said to have differing views on the club’s next managerial appointment, with disagreements emerging over their preferred candidates.

Carrick’s position has come under increasing scrutiny following United’s disappointing 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The result intensified concerns about the team’s performances, while captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned aspects of the club’s approach.

Despite appointing Carrick permanently in May, United are reportedly considering another managerial change after managing just two victories in 11 matches.

There is reportedly some sympathy for Carrick among the club’s hierarchy, particularly following complaints about the club’s summer recruitment strategy. However, the team’s poor results and growing disagreements between players and the manager have increased pressure on the former midfielder.

The main disagreement reportedly centres on the preferred candidate to succeed Carrick. Vivell is understood to favour Julian Nagelsmann, having assessed the German coach extensively during his previous work at Chelsea and Red Bull.

Wilcox, who holds a senior position within United’s football structure, reportedly prefers a manager with proven Premier League experience.

Eddie Howe, Fabian Hurzeler, Unai Emery and Antonio Conte are among the names linked with the position should Carrick be dismissed.

However, potential obstacles remain, with Hurzeler under contract at Brighton and Emery potentially difficult to lure away from his current project.

United are expected to give Carrick the opportunity to lead the team against Bournemouth on Sunday, although possible replacements have reportedly already been approached behind the scenes.

The reported tensions follow a public exchange between Carrick and Fernandes after the defeat to Como. The Portuguese captain suggested that the decision not to press opponents had come from the coaching staff.

Carrick responded firmly, saying: "Whatever tactics you play, if you don't run back, you ain't going to win."

Fernandes also criticised what he described as excessive attention to Manchester United’s past, adding to concerns about the atmosphere surrounding the club.
