According to a report by FootballTransfers on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Chelsea are exploring the right-back market amid growing uncertainty over Malo Gusto’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge, with the club reportedly sending scouts across Europe to identify potential replacements.
The Blues are assessing options for an “elite-level” right-back as they prepare for the possibility of Gusto leaving the club in 2027.
The 23-year-old France international joined Chelsea from Lyon in 2023 and has since established himself as a valuable member of the squad. However, his playing time has decreased this season under head coach Xabi Alonso, raising questions about his future at the club.
Chelsea were reportedly willing to consider offers of around €90 million for Gusto during the summer transfer window. Liverpool and Manchester City were linked with the defender, but neither club made a direct approach, allowing him to remain at Stamford Bridge.
His market value has since declined, with FootballTransfers estimating his current Expected Transfer Value at €53.1 million. Chelsea are also understood to be considering reducing their asking price next year if they decide to approve his departure.
Gusto has started just five matches across all competitions this season and has played only two minutes in Chelsea’s last three Premier League fixtures. Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly monitoring his situation, although the defender is currently happy at Stamford Bridge.
Transfer reporter Dean Jones claims Chelsea are conducting scouting missions across Europe to identify suitable candidates in case Gusto leaves the club.
Alonso already has several options at right-back, including club captain Reece James, summer signing Marco Palestra and academy graduate Josh Acheampong. Pedro Neto has also impressed when deployed as a right wing-back this season, giving the manager additional options.
Gusto’s contract runs until 2030, placing Chelsea in a strong negotiating position should interested clubs make offers for his services. His experience could also prove increasingly valuable if the club qualifies for European competition next season.
However, the emergence of young defender Genesis Antwi during his loan spell at sister club Strasbourg could also influence Chelsea’s decision regarding Gusto’s future.
