Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has urged football fans to respect Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to retire from international football, insisting that the Portuguese icon still has ambitions to achieve before bringing his playing career to an end.
Ronaldo announced on Thursday that he was stepping away from international duty with Portugal, drawing tributes from across the football world.
Reacting to the announcement during a media briefing on Friday, Mourinho declined to pass judgment on the 41-year-old’s decision, stressing that it deserves respect.
“I don’t want to judge him. I think that instead of commenting, we should respect his decision. And obviously, I respect it,” Mourinho said.
The veteran coach was also quick to clarify that Ronaldo has not retired from football altogether, noting that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains determined to accomplish more in his club career.
“This is not retirement. He hasn’t ended his career.
“Those who know him understand that he still has goals he wants to achieve in his career.
“The only thing I would wish is that when he eventually retires from football completely, that day will be different from yesterday.”
Ronaldo’s international retirement brings the curtain down on one of the most decorated careers in international football, although he is expected to continue playing at club level as he pursues further milestones before eventually calling time on his illustrious career.
