Thibaut Courtois is nearing a contract extension with Real Madrid beyond June 2027 and has reconsidered his international future with the Belgium national team. The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who turned 34 on May 11, has played every minute for Real Madrid at the start of the 2026-2027 season, featuring in nine La Liga matches and two Champions League fixtures.
Courtois stated that discussions regarding his long-term future at Real Madrid are progressing smoothly. His current deal runs until June 2027, but the Belgian international expects an agreement to be finalized soon.
“It’s not finished yet. It should normally be sorted out quickly. There is no problem,” Courtois told DAZN. “We just need to find time for my manager and my dad to discuss the final details. Usually, clubs wait until the end of the season to extend players. I think the Real Madrid board is happy with me and they want to sort this out as quickly as possible. That is my wish as well. I want to stay here for a long time, I’m doing everything for that.”
Following a discomfort during Belgium’s 2026 World Cup quarterfinal against Spain, Courtois appeared ready to step away from international football. However, the goalkeeper acknowledged that the tournament altered his perspective.
“I imagined stopping after the World Cup, but it was one of my favorite tournaments with the Red Devils,” Courtois said. Describing the squad atmosphere, he noted fond memories of playing golf during camp with teammates Senne Lammens, Timothy Castagne, Kevin De Bruyne, and Charles De Ketelaere. “I had the feeling I wanted to continue. In the meantime, my father got married on September 26,” he added, noting the scheduling proximity to Belgium’s fixtures on September 25 in Rome and September 28 in Brussels.
Despite dealing with discomfort during the World Cup, Courtois has maintained an unbroken presence. He has played every minute across domestic and European competition for Madrid.
