MC Alger face a difficult task when they host Enugu Rangers in the second leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary-round tie on Friday.
The Algerian side lost the first meeting 2-0 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, and now need a decisive victory to remain in the competition. They must win by three clear goals without conceding, or by at least four goals, to secure qualification.
The match will be played at the Ali La Pointe Stadium in Algiers, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 French time and 20:00 in Algeria.
The game will be open to supporters after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rejected the Flying Antelopes’ request for the return leg to be played behind closed doors. That request followed events during the first match.
No broadcaster has been announced in France. In Algeria, the match will be shown on TV1, the terrestrial channel, and potentially on beIN Sports Mena, although the specific channel has not yet been confirmed.
MC Alger’s task was made harder by the circumstances of the first leg, which ended 2-0 with both teams reduced to 10 players. Oussama Benhaoua was sent off in that match and will serve a suspension on Friday.
Failure to overturn the deficit would end MC Alger’s hopes of reaching the final phase of the CAF Champions League for the first time in three seasons.
However, the club have already produced a comeback against Enugu Rangers after losing the away leg by two goals. That recovery came 50 years ago, on 11 November 1976, in the second leg of a semi-final.
After a 2-0 defeat away from home, Abdenour Bellemou, Abdelwahab Zenir and Abdeslam Bousri scored to turn the tie around for the Vert et Rouge in front of their supporters.
MC Alger now need another emphatic home performance if they are to repeat that result and keep their continental campaign alive.
