The Ghana Premier League’s early title race takes centre stage on Sunday as leaders Medeama SC host fourth-placed Aduana FC in a high-stakes Matchday 8 showdown at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium, with just one point separating the sides.
Still smarting from their first defeat of the season, Medeama must respond to protect their place at the summit, while an in-form Aduana side will see the encounter as a golden opportunity to close the gap and throw the title race wide open.
The Mauve and Yellow suffered a 2-1 defeat away to FC Samartex 1996 last weekend, bringing their impressive winning run to an end. However, their setback in Samreboi has not diminished their strong start to the campaign, with the Tarkwa-based side sitting atop the standings on 14 points from seven matches.
Medeama have been prolific in attack, scoring a league-high 13 goals while conceding seven. They will be confident of an immediate response, particularly with home advantage firmly on their side. The two-time league champions have won their last seven Premier League matches at the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium, making their home ground a formidable venue for visiting teams.
Their record against Aduana at home also offers encouragement. Medeama have won four, drawn one and lost just once in their last six home league meetings with the Fire Club since the 2020/21 season. They will be keen to maintain that dominance as they seek to consolidate their position at the summit.
Aduana, however, travel to Tarkwa with ambitions of their own. The Fire Club occupy fourth place with 13 points and have recorded four wins and one defeat in their last five league matches. Their latest success was a hard-fought 1-0 home victory over newly promoted FC Ashanti Gold’04, a result that further strengthened their confidence ahead of Sunday's crucial encounter.
The Dormaa-based side have built their campaign on defensive solidity, conceding just four goals in seven matches — the joint second-fewest in the league. With seven goals scored, Aduana will be looking to combine their defensive discipline with greater attacking efficiency against a Medeama side that has been the division's most potent offensive force.
Their away form also suggests they are capable of making life difficult for the league leaders. Aduana have recorded one win, one draw and one defeat in their three away league matches, scoring twice and conceding just once.
