Ghana’s Black Maidens have advanced to the quarter-final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Argentina 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Jessica Appiah gave Ghana the lead in the 16th minute, but the discipline Argentina side fought back late, with Mercedes Diz scoring in the 86th minute to restore parity and force the tie to be decided by a penalty shootout.
Ghana had been reduced to ten players four minutes before Argentina’s equaliser after Hajara Adams received a red card in the 82nd minute.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Black Maidens held their nerve in the shootout, converting their penalties to claim a 5-4 victory and book their place in the quarter-final.
Ghana will now face the winner of the game between Japan and Kenya in the last eight.
