Rio Ngumoha’s rapid rise at Liverpool: records, England debut and Chelsea exit

Rio Ngumoha is emerging as one of Liverpool’s most promising young players, with the 18-year-old winger making an impact in both domestic and European football.

The England youth international, who is of Nigerian heritage, has attracted attention for his pace, direct running and ability to influence important moments. His progress has also taken him from a controversial departure from Chelsea to a place in the senior England squad.

A record-breaker for Liverpool

Ngumoha made an immediate mark in August 2025 when he became Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer in the Premier League.

He was 16 years and 361 days old when he scored in the 100th minute against Newcastle, helping Liverpool to a dramatic 3-2 victory. The goal placed his name in the club’s record books and underlined the confidence being placed in him at Anfield.

He has since added another notable achievement in the Champions League. Against Villarreal, Ngumoha provided two assists as Liverpool came from behind to win 4-3.

His performance earned him the UEFA Player of the Match award and made him Liverpool’s youngest assist provider in the history of the competition.

The Chelsea move that caused frustration

Before establishing himself at Liverpool, Ngumoha spent several years in Chelsea’s academy, having joined the club at the age of eight.

However, in the summer of 2024, he decided not to extend his time with the Blues and instead moved to Liverpool. The opportunity to reach senior football more quickly is understood to have played a part in his decision.

Because the move took place without a transfer fee, it frustrated Chelsea, who regarded Ngumoha as a player with exceptional potential. Liverpool won the race for a highly sought-after prospect, and his early performances have strengthened the case for the club’s investment.

Three England appearances

Ngumoha’s development has not been limited to club football. Comfortable on either wing, he took an important step forward in June 2026 when he made his senior England debut in a friendly against New Zealand at the age of 17.

He now has three appearances for the Three Lions, adding international experience to a career that remains at an early stage.

Ngumoha’s contract with Liverpool runs until 2028, but the club’s directors want to offer him a new deal to secure his future. His market value is estimated at 50 million euros by Transfermarkt.

Liverpool are keen to retain the young winger for the long term as they continue to assess his potential. Their next fixture will be against Brighton in the eighth round of the English league season.
