AshantiGold 04 appoint influential France-based football executive Lydia Gyau Leclercq as CEO to drive African ambitions

Ghana Premier League club FC AshantiGold 04 have appointed France-based Ghanaian football administrator Lydia Gyau Leclercq as their new chief executive officer in a major move aimed at transforming the club into one of Africa's leading football institutions.

Leclercq brings extensive international experience in football administration, player management, transfers and building relationships between African and European clubs.

Her appointment forms part of AshantiGold's ambitious plans to strengthen its management structures, develop international partnerships and create greater opportunities for emerging Ghanaian footballers.

Edward Akwasi Akuoko, who previously served as chief executive, will assume the role of deputy CEO under the new administrative arrangement.

Leclercq is regarded as a well-connected figure in European football, having developed her expertise under the guidance of prominent French football agent Bruno Satin, who has been involved in major international transfers and player representation.

Her career has included involvement in player movements and negotiations involving several prominent African footballers.

Among those linked to her professional work are Ghana internationals Ebenezer Assifuah, Majeed Waris and Mohammed Rabiu, as well as former Cote d'Ivoire captain Serge Aurier and midfielder Yacouba Sylla.

Her experience includes involvement in arrangements relating to Assifuah's moves to Le Havre and Pau, Waris's spell at Strasbourg and Aurier's transfers to Nottingham Forest and Galatasaray.

She has also been credited with contributing to efforts that brought defender Alexander Djiku into Ghana's national team setup, as well as football-related arrangements involving former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr.

Her professional network extends across France and other European football markets, with connections involving players and clubs from several French-speaking African countries.

For AshantiGold, these relationships could prove particularly valuable in establishing partnerships with European clubs, improving recruitment structures and creating pathways for young players to develop and pursue professional careers abroad.

The appointment also signals the club's determination to combine its footballing heritage with international expertise and modern management practices.

AshantiGold have a distinguished history of developing some of Ghana's most recognisable footballers, including former Black Stars captain John Mensah, former national team coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor, Mubarak Wakaso and Augustine Ahinful.

The Obuasi-based club established itself among Ghana's leading football institutions through domestic success and a reputation for identifying and nurturing talented players.

Its achievements include reaching the final of the African Champions League in 1997, one of the most significant milestones in Ghanaian club football.

Leclercq's appointment is expected to support AshantiGold's ambitions to restore that continental prominence while building a more commercially competitive and professionally managed institution.

Her immediate challenge will be to turn her international experience and football connections into sustainable opportunities for the club, its players and its wider development programme.

The club's decision to appoint an executive with extensive European football experience represents a significant step in its ambition to become a major force in Ghanaian and African football.
