UEFA Champions League L: PSG lead as Man Utd slip to 21st, Real Madrid join 5 clubs with perfect records

Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as the leaders of the UEFA Champions League league-phase table after three rounds of matches, while Manchester United have dropped to 21st position following their 4-1 defeat to Como in Italy.

The defending champions lead the 36-team standings with nine points and a goal difference of plus nine, ahead of Aston Villa, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Real Betis, who have also won all three of their opening matches. Blueprint reports

The conclusion of Matchday Three on Wednesday, October 21, produced significant changes in the table, with Real Madrid defeating RB Leipzig 4-1, Aston Villa overcoming Viking 3-1, and Arsenal securing a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich.

Elsewhere, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scored as Galatasaray defeated his former club Lille 4-2, while Manchester United suffered another damaging defeat that left them with three points from three matches.

The standings show a clear divide between the teams building early momentum and those already facing pressure to improve their results. With five rounds remaining in the league phase, however, there is still considerable room for movement before qualification for the knockout stages is decided.

PSG, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Real Madrid set the pace

PSG occupy the summit with nine points from three victories, having scored 14 goals and conceded five. Their attacking output gives them the best goal difference among the teams with maximum points.

Aston Villa are second, also on nine points, with 12 goals scored and three conceded. Their 3-1 victory over Viking on Wednesday maintained their perfect record and reinforced their position among the early pace-setters.

Liverpool sit third after defeating Villarreal 4-3 in a seven-goal encounter. The English club have scored 12 goals and conceded seven, giving them a goal difference of plus five.

Real Madrid occupy fourth position following their 4-1 win over RB Leipzig. The Spanish giants have also collected nine points, scoring 10 goals and conceding five.

Real Betis complete the top five with nine points. Their 1-0 victory over Feyenoord secured their third consecutive win, although their goal difference of plus three leaves them behind the four clubs above them.

The five teams have separated themselves from the rest of the competition by winning every match so far. Their continued success in the remaining fixtures could put them in a strong position to secure direct qualification for the round of 16.

Stuttgart and Arsenal remain unbeaten

VfB Stuttgart occupy sixth place with seven points from two victories and a draw. They have scored seven goals and conceded two, giving them a goal difference of plus five.

Arsenal are seventh, also with seven points, following their 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in Germany. The Gunners had won their opening two matches before being held by the German champions.

Arsenal have scored six goals and conceded two, leaving them with a goal difference of plus four. Their ability to earn a point away to Bayern keeps them within reach of the leading group.

Barcelona occupy eighth position with six points after losing 4-2 to PSG on Tuesday. The Spanish club had won their first two matches but were unable to maintain their perfect record in Paris.

Despite the defeat, Barcelona remain in the automatic qualification places, although their position could change significantly during the next round of matches.

Como rise as Manchester City and Club Brugge stay in contention

Como are ninth with six points after their emphatic victory over Manchester United. The Italian side have scored 10 goals and conceded five, giving them a goal difference of plus five.

Manchester City are 10th, also with six points, after defeating AEK Athens 5-1. The result was a strong response following their previous defeat to PSG and kept them firmly in contention for a top-eight finish.

Club Brugge occupy 11th position after beating Lens 3-0, while Sporting CP are 12th with six points despite losing 3-2 at home to LASK.

Borussia Dortmund complete the group of teams on six points in 13th position. The German club defeated Sabah 2-1 on Tuesday to record their second victory of the campaign.

The cluster of clubs on six points means the race for the top eight remains open. A single victory or defeat in the next round could substantially alter the positions of several teams.

Bayern Munich occupy 14th position

Bayern Munich are 14th with five points after drawing 2-2 with Arsenal. The German side have recorded one victory and two draws, remaining unbeaten but falling behind clubs with stronger winning records.

Bayern have scored 10 goals and conceded five, giving them a goal difference of plus five. Their position illustrates the importance of converting draws into victories in the league-phase format.

Roma are 15th with four points after their 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava. Atlético Madrid follow in 16th place, also on four points, after drawing 1-1 with Stuttgart.

Shakhtar Donetsk occupy 17th position with four points, despite losing 1-0 to Inter Milan on Wednesday. PSV Eindhoven are 18th, also with four points, after beating Porto 1-0.

These clubs remain within the qualification places, but their positions leave little room for complacency as the league phase progresses.

Manchester United fall to 21st after Como defeat

Manchester United are 21st with three points from three matches, having won once and lost twice.

Their 4-1 defeat to Como was particularly damaging because it followed a 2-0 loss to Atlético Madrid. United had opened their campaign with a 4-0 victory over Sabah, but consecutive defeats have pushed them into the lower half of the table.

They have scored five goals and conceded six, leaving them with a goal difference of minus one.

Although 21st place remains within the range of teams that would qualify for the knockout-phase play-offs if the league phase ended now, United cannot afford many more setbacks. Finishing between ninth and 24th would require them to contest a two-legged play-off rather than qualify directly for the round of 16.

Inter Milan are 20th with three points following their 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk. Villarreal are 19th, also with three points, despite their narrow 4-3 defeat to Liverpool.

Napoli occupy 22nd position after losing 4-3 to Bodø/Glimt, while Galatasaray are 23rd following their victory over Lille. LASK complete the current top 24 after their surprise 3-2 away win against Sporting CP.

The positions of these teams underline how closely contested the middle of the table has become. With five rounds remaining, United still have an opportunity to recover, but their next fixtures will be crucial to their hopes of avoiding further pressure.

Three clubs remain without a point

At the bottom of the table, Porto, Lille and Slovan Bratislava have lost all three opening matches and remain without a point.

Porto are 34th after defeats to Manchester City, Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven. Lille occupy 35th position following losses to Real Betis, Arsenal and Galatasaray.

Slovan Bratislava are 36th, having conceded 13 goals and scored only once. Their 4-0 defeat to Roma on Tuesday extended a difficult start to the competition.

These three clubs face an increasingly urgent task to collect points if they are to climb out of the elimination places. Under the current format, teams finishing from 25th to 36th at the end of the league phase are eliminated from the competition.

How the Champions League qualification format works

The 2026/2027 Champions League features 36 clubs in a single league phase. Each team plays eight different opponents, with the final standings determining qualification for the knockout stages.

The top eight teams at the end of the league phase advance directly to the round of 16.

Clubs finishing ninth to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off, with the winners joining the top eight in the round of 16.

Teams finishing between 25th and 36th are eliminated and do not transfer into another UEFA competition.

With only three of the eight league-phase rounds completed, the current table is an early indication of performance rather than a final verdict on any club’s European campaign.

Matchday Four could reshape the table

The fourth round of matches is scheduled for November 3 and 4. Manchester United will host Roma, while Arsenal travel to Slavia Prague. Real Madrid visit AEK Athens, Liverpool face Fenerbahçe away, and Manchester City travel to Leipzig.

Aston Villa face Barcelona in one of the round’s most significant fixtures, while Bayern Munich travel to Atlético Madrid. PSG visit Villarreal, and Galatasaray host Stuttgart.

Those encounters could further separate the leading teams from the chasing pack, but the league-phase format leaves room for substantial changes. For United, the visit of Roma offers an opportunity to respond to their recent defeats and improve their position. For PSG, Villa, Liverpool, Madrid and Betis, the challenge is to maintain the winning momentum that has put them at the top of the standings.
