The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Committee has rejected Rangers International FC’s request to have their CAF Champions League second-leg encounter against MC Alger played behind closed doors.
The decision means the crucial return-leg fixture will proceed with spectators in attendance, handing the Algerian hosts the opportunity to count on the support of their fans as they seek to overturn a two-goal deficit.
Rangers, Nigeria’s representatives in the competition, head into Friday’s encounter with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg and will be hoping to protect their lead to secure a place in the next round of the continental competition.
The rejection of Rangers’ request means the Enugu-based club must prepare for a potentially hostile atmosphere at the Shaheed Ali Amar Stadium, popularly known as Ali La Pointe Stadium, in Douera, Algeria.
With supporters expected to fill the stands, MC Alger will look to use their home advantage to put pressure on the Nigerian side from the opening whistle.
However, Rangers have a significant advantage after their impressive first-leg performance, which left them firmly in control of the tie.
The Flying Antelopes will need to remain disciplined defensively, manage the tempo of the game and take advantage of any opportunities that arise as MC Alger push forward in search of goals.
For the Algerian side, the task is clear: score at least twice to draw level on aggregate and keep their qualification hopes alive, while also preventing Rangers from finding the net.
An away goal for Rangers would further complicate MC Alger’s mission, increasing the pressure on the hosts to deliver an attacking performance without leaving themselves exposed at the back.
The encounter is expected to be fiercely contested, with both teams aware of the importance of the result in their quest to progress in Africa’s premier club competition.
Despite the setback of having their request rejected, Rangers will be determined to demonstrate their quality and composure in front of the Algerian supporters.
The Nigerian club will also be looking to avoid unnecessary disciplinary problems and maintain concentration throughout the contest as they seek to complete the job started in the first leg.
With the aggregate advantage in their favour, Rangers have the opportunity to secure qualification, but they must be prepared for an intense challenge from an MC Alger side backed by its home crowd.
All eyes will now be on Douera as Rangers attempt to defend their 2-0 advantage and move closer to the next stage of the CAF Champions League.
