Kasim Gökyıldız Resigns as Heart of Lions Coach After Eight Games

Turkish coach Kasim Gökyıldız has resigned as head coach of Heart of Lions FC after just eight matches in the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, according to multiple reports. The club is yet to issue an official confirmation or public statement on the matter.

Kasim Gökyıldız leaves Kpando Heart of Lions

This would end a short tenure that started with optimism after his appointment earlier in the year.

Heart of Lions appointed Gökyıldız in early July 2026 on a one-year contract with an option for renewal. He replaced experienced Ghanaian coach Bashir Hayford, whose contract had expired after a multi-year spell at the club. The club welcomed him publicly at the time, expressing delight at the appointment.

Gökyıldız, a Turkish tactician born on November 15, 1965, in Adana, returned to Ghanaian football with prior experience in the country. He had previously managed or worked with King Faisal, Bechem United, and Hohoe United, among other roles, and also had an earlier brief stint linked to AshantiGold as well as coaching experience in Turkey and elsewhere.

Heart of Lions had finished the prior season in a precarious position near the relegation zone, making the coaching change part of efforts to stabilize and improve.

Under Gökyıldız, the team struggled significantly in the opening phase of the 2026/27 campaign. Heart of Lions recorded just one win, two draws, and five defeats across the first eight league matches, accumulating only eight points. This left them sitting just one point above the relegation zone and intensified pressure on the technical team.

A notable recent result was a 2-1 defeat to Bibiani Gold Stars in their Week 8 fixture. Despite a competitive showing, the loss contributed to the overall poor start. Gökyıldız had previously commented on other results, such as a loss to Asante Kotoko earlier in the season, attributing issues partly to a lack of focus in key moments while praising his players’ efforts in other instances.

The difficult start, marked by inconsistency and results that left little margin for error in a competitive league, is cited as the reason for his decision to step down. Reports frame it as a resignation amid the struggles.

If confirmed, the departure would leave Heart of Lions searching for a new head coach while they remain in a relegation scrap. Their next fixture is a home game against Bechem United at the Kpando Sports Stadium on Sunday, November 1, 2026, with kick-off around 15:00 GMT.

Club management would then face the task of appointing a successor capable of steadying the team, improving results, restoring confidence, and pulling the side clear of the bottom of the table.
