Black Maidens beat Argentina on penalties to reach U-17 World Cup quarter-finals

Ghana’s Black Maidens have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Argentina 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Jessica Appiah Asamoah gave Ghana the lead in the 16th minute at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, with the team holding onto their advantage until Mercedes Diz equalised for Argentina in the 86th minute.

With neither side able to find a winner before the final whistle, the Round of 16 tie was decided by a penalty shootout, where Ghana held their nerve to secure victory.

The win sends coach Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side into the last eight, continuing their campaign at the tournament in Morocco.

Ghana will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between Japan and Kenya in the quarter-finals as they pursue a place in the semi-finals.
