Everton host Newcastle United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night and the Toffees’ record against the Magpies makes for interesting reading.

Everton lost 2-0 to Arsenal at the weekend, and there was disappointment again over David Moyes’ approach to the game. Many viewed the game as something of a free hit, and that he should have had his team be a bit bolder.

But it was another tepid display from Everton, who were undone by goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel.

But Everton have the chance to get back to winning ways on Thursday as Newcastle come to town. The Magpies secured a much-needed 2-0 win against Crystal Palace at the weekend to actually leapfrog Everton in the table.

Ahead of the game, which could see Moyes make three changes, we take a look at the records of both Everton and the manager himself against Newcastle.

Everton are pretty much neck and neck with Newcastle for wins

With these two clubs, the stats are almost perfectly balanced.

There have been 188 meetings to date between the two sides, with Everton winning 78 and Newcastle winning 71. There have been 38 draws.

Everton have done fairly well in recent years. In the last six meetings over the last three seasons, the Toffees have only lost once. That came on Newcastle’s first ever visit to Hill Dickinson Stadium. But during that run, Everton have won three and drawn the other two.

The two sides also met in pre-season at Murrayfield, of course, with Everton running out 3-1 winners thanks to goals by Thierno Barry, Iliman Ndiaye and Tyrique George.

What about David Moyes’ own record vs Newcastle?

Moyes had a pretty torrid record against Arsenal so it was perhaps always unlikely that Everton were going to get a result at the weekend, but against Newcastle it is much better.

The Scot has come up against Newcastle a whopping 37 times so far in his managerial career, and won 13 times, drawn 10 and lost 14.

As Everton manager, he has recorded 11 wins, six draws and eight defeats, and his teams have scored 45 goals and conceded 44. During his latest spell as Everton boss, he’s overseen two wins and a loss.

The records of both Everton and Moyes against Newcastle essentially show that it really could go either way tomorrow night. The teams have tended to be quite evenly matched throughout history, but Everton will hope that home advantage will count for something against a Magpies side boosted by a weekend win over Palace.

Everton, of course, have not won a trophy since 1995 when they won the FA Cup, so plenty of fans are keen for Moyes to field as strong a team as possible, with a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on offer.
