The African Table Tennis Federation (ITTF Africa) has announced the host nations for its 2027 and 2028 regional and continental championships during the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Tangier, Morocco, on 21 October 2026.
A major highlight of the AGM was the selection of host nations for the continent’s premier competitions. Nigeria emerged victorious in the bid to host the 2028 ITTF Africa Championships, Africa’s flagship table tennis event, after defeating Tunisia in a closely contested vote.
Nigeria’s strong reputation for organising major international competitions and its extensive experience in hosting world-class table tennis events proved decisive in the bidding process. Following presentations by both countries, delegates agreed to determine the host through a vote. Of the 38 certified votes cast, including 31 delegates present at the AGM and seven authorised proxies, Nigeria secured 23 votes, while Tunisia received 15.
The AGM also confirmed hosts for several continental events across 2027 and 2028. In 2027, Libya will host the Africa Cup, Algeria the African Championships, Botswana the Youth Championships and Nigeria the African Para Championships. For 2028, Nigeria will host the African Championships, Rwanda the Youth Championships and Egypt the African Para Championships. The host of the 2028 Africa Cup is yet to be determined.
For the regional competitions in 2027, Morocco, Kenya, Gabon, Zambia and Ghana were selected to host championships across Africa’s five regions.
These regional championships remain a vital component of the African table tennis calendar, serving as qualification pathways for the continent’s elite competitions and providing valuable competitive opportunities for emerging talents. Teams seeking qualification for the African Championships will be required to compete in their respective regional events, making the tournaments crucial to the continent’s competitive structure.
The qualification pathway will ultimately lead to the 2028 ITTF World Team Championships Finals in Fukuoka, Japan, where Africa’s top teams will compete against the world’s best.
Morocco will host the Northern Regional Championships, welcoming teams from across North Africa. Kenya has been awarded the Eastern Regional Championships, while Gabon will stage the Central Regional Championships. Zambia will host the Southern Regional Championships, and Ghana will welcome teams from across West Africa for the Western Regional Championships.
In his address to delegates, ITTF Africa President, Wahid Oshodi, urged host associations to begin preparations early to ensure the successful organisation of their respective events.
The continental governing body also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting organisers and participating member associations in delivering high-quality championships that continue to raise the profile of table tennis across Africa.
