Sports federations in Ghana could begin receiving financial support from the Ghana Sports Fund in 2027 as the government seeks to strengthen the institutional and financial foundations of sports development.

The Fund’s Administrator, Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku, gave the indication during a meeting with the Ghana Chess Association on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Fund’s boardroom.

Dr Wuaku expressed hope that the Fund would begin supporting federations next year and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that sports federations receive the support needed to sustain their activities.

He made the remarks while commending the Ghana National Chess Team for its achievement at the 46th Chess Olympiad, despite limited resources and the absence of direct government financial support.

The engagement highlighted the funding challenges confronting sporting disciplines and the need for a sustainable financing framework that enables federations to train athletes, acquire equipment and compete internationally.

The Ghana Chess Association, led by its President, Christiana Ashley, appealed for financial assistance to strengthen professional training and improve the team’s competitiveness.

The Association also identified the high cost of electronic chessboards, estimated at between US$1,000 and US$2,200 per unit, as a major obstacle to advanced training.

The anticipated support from the Fund could provide an opportunity to address some of these challenges, although specific allocations and the implementation framework are yet to be confirmed.

The Ghana Sports Fund is scheduled for official launch on December 10, 2026, in an event expected to be attended by the President.

The extent to which the Fund can translate its mandate into predictable financial support for federations will be significant to the long-term development of sports in Ghana.
