Bechem United president Kingsley Owusu Achau has questioned the appeal of the Ghana Premier League, admitting he would choose to watch a high-profile European fixture over a domestic match if both were being played at the same time.
Owusu Achau believes the local top flight has struggled to attract supporters because of a lack of excitement and concerns surrounding the organisation and scheduling of matches.
Speaking in an interview with Hot FM, the Bechem United chief was candid about his preference for European football, using the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona as an example.
“I would rather watch El Clasico than a local match when they are playing at the same time; the local league is not attractive,” he said.
His comments highlight the concerns surrounding the Ghana Premier League's ability to compete for the attention of football fans, particularly when major European fixtures clash with domestic league matches.
The competition continues to face the challenge of improving its matchday experience and attracting larger crowds to stadiums across the country.
Meanwhile, attention has shifted to Matchday 10 of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League, with fixtures scheduled to take place at various venues this weekend.
Bechem United will host FC Samartex at the Nana Gyeabour Park, with Owusu Achau's side hoping to secure a positive result in front of their home supporters.
