RS Berkane and Esperance de Tunis have reached the group stage of the CAF Champions League, while AFAD Plateau were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup after losing to CS Sfaxien.
RS Berkane sealed a second successive historic qualification for Africa’s premier club competition by completing a 3-0 aggregate victory over Sierra Leone’s Star Sport Academy in the second and final preliminary round.
The Moroccan side had won the first leg 2-0 in Monrovia, with Oussama Lamlioui scoring both goals. They completed the job at the Stade Municipal de Berkane on Saturday, when Youssef Mehri scored the only goal of the match in the 53rd minute.
Esperance de Tunis also progressed, overcoming Libya’s Swehly at the Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi in Rades.
The Tunisian club had gone into the second leg trailing 1-0 from the match in Libya and were without the suspended Youcef Belaili. Imad Faraj restored parity in the tie with an eighth-minute goal, before Esperance prevailed 3-1 in the penalty shootout.
The result saw the Tunisian club set a new competition record. It is the 24th time the Sang et Or have qualified for the final phase of the tournament.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, AFAD Plateau’s campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat by CS Sfaxien at the Stade Taieb Mhiri in Sfax.
The Ivorian side had secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Abidjan, but their hopes of reaching the group stage were ended when Iyed Belwafi scored for CS Sfaxien in the seventh minute.
The result means AFAD Plateau will not reach the CAF Confederation Cup, leaving Cote d’Ivoire without its first club in the competition.
