Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC served up an entertaining 1-1 draw in the weekend’s headline Ghana Premier League fixture at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday, with two powerful headers ensuring the spoils were shared in a fiercely contested Matchday Nine encounter.
The defending champions Medeama took the lead late in the first half through Usman Safianu before Asante Kotoko captain Musah Hamzarat rose to the occasion with a commanding header to restore parity in the second half.
The game burst into life in the 42nd minute when Safianu found the breakthrough for Medeama, sending the visitors into the break with a slender advantage. The forward’s well-timed header capped an impressive first-half performance from the league leaders, who showed composure and attacking intent against a determined Kotoko side.
However, the Porcupine Warriors responded with renewed urgency after the restart, and their persistence paid off in the 55th minute. Captain Musah Hamzarat rose highest to connect with a training-ground-style set-piece routine, powering a header into the net to bring the home supporters to their feet and level the contest.
The result keeps Medeama firmly at the summit of the Ghana Premier League standings with 18 points, level with Western rivals FC Samartex 1996, who secured a 1-0 victory over Gold Stars in the Western derby. Medeama’s impressive campaign now stands at five wins, three draws and one defeat from nine matches, underlining their consistency and determination to defend their position at the top.
For Asante Kotoko, the draw represents another missed opportunity to climb the standings. The Porcupine Warriors have slipped to 10th place with 13 points from nine matches, having recorded three wins, four draws and two defeats.
