Ibrox Noise has learned that AEK Athens wish to review Rangers James Penrice and his loan deal at Ibrox.
As is widely understood and has been perceived by all, the Rangers left back, just called up to the Scottish national side for the first time, has been an absolutely outstanding addition since the summer window. He has performed at the highest level and, as a Rangers man, has been a valuable addition to the squad.
He is arguably the most popular player these days in the Rangers squad, although that is an entirely subjective comment.
Nevertheless, his parent club AEK Athens loaned him to Rangers with an option to buy. As we know, the reported price was £400,000 for the initial loan plus a further £800,000 to secure him permanently.
However, it is Ibrox Noise’s understanding that these figures may well be subject to change based on performance.
AEK Athens were well aware that they had a solid player whose heart was no longer in Greece when Rangers’ interest emerged. They offered a generous deal for him to return to Govan. However, they were aware that he might perform better than expected under the modest deal initially agreed.
It is understood that AEK Athens are trying to shift the goalposts to increase the price.
Naturally, very few would deny that loan Rangers man James Penrice could be worth up to £5M based on current form. And the idea of £1.2M overall is a complete steal. Rangers did wonders to get that price.
But it is understood from sources in Greece that AEK Athens are looking to renegotiate that price and increase it.
We are not sure exactly what the legal standpoint would be for doing so. However, football officials in Athens are looking for the best way to secure a higher premium for their former player. He has become a complete asset in Govan.
AEK Athens, of course, are one of the biggest clubs in Greece. But they are well aware of the sheer pressure and prestige of Rangers.
They did not expect a player signed as backup to Tuur Rommens to become first choice and supersede the Belgian.
As such, they are looking to find a way to renegotiate the fee and secure a higher figure for his signature.
Rangers, of course, would still wish to secure him. However, they would not be keen on paying more than is necessary.
More as we get it.
